How to Remove a Car Battery

The battery is a crucial component of your vehicle, as it starts the car, keeps it running, and powers all electrical components and lights. When it comes time for a replacement, though, you may be curious how to remove a car battery on your own. Doing so isn’t difficult, but removing a car battery can be dangerous, so it’s important to follow safety protocols if you’re at your Houston home. Learn how to remove a car battery properly in this guide from Humble Hyundai.

Removing a Car Battery: Preparation

When removing a car battery, preparation is key. Batteries have the power to deliver deadly shocks, so here are a few safety precautions to take and tips to prepare for the process.

  • Wear insulated gloves and safety goggles.
  • Remove any and all jewelry.
  • Make sure your vehicle is completely turned off and situated in a well-ventilated area.
  • Have zip ties handy to secure the battery cables and keep them from touching. If they do, they may create sparks and become a fire hazard..
  • Cover the positive cable with a cloth to prevent metal-to-metal contact.

Removing a Car Battery: Removal

When you are ready, follow these steps on how to remove a car battery safely.

  • Identify the negative terminal, and use a wrench or pliers to hold the terminal in place.
  • With another wrench or pliers, remove the nut and pull off the negative cable, securing it away from the battery.
  • Repeat these steps for the positive cable, making sure the two cables do not touch and remembering to cover the positive cable with a cloth.
  • Remove screws and bolts that hold a battery securing bracket in place, if there is one.
  • Lift the battery straight out of the bracket carefully, as it may weigh up to 40 pounds.

Removing a Car Battery: Testing

Before removing a car battery, it’s a good idea to test it. The Humble Hyundai service team is happy to test your car battery when you bring your vehicle in for maintenance, but you can also do so at your The Woodlands home. All you have to do is start your car and assess your headlight strength. If they are noticeably dim, then your battery charge may be low. Alternately, if your headlights maintain a normal level of brightness, your battery is likely good to go.
